Chasing The Dragons
In the early 1980's, drug abuse on Merseyside had reached a crisis point. Birkenhead had rapidly become known as
'Smack City' by the tabloid press. The Wirral Crime Squad, led by Inspector Mike Mulloy, was formed to tackle the
dealers head on and smash the drug rings.
With humour, honesty and frankness, Mike Mulloy vividly describes the busts, the arrests and the complex network
that supplied the Wirral Peninsula with the deadliest of drugs.
Mike Mulloy joined the Liverpool City Police in 1960 and saw attachments to the Regional Crime Squad, Murder Squads,
Robbery Squad and Serious Crime Squad. Serving for thirty three years, he attained the rank of Chief Inspector,
Head of Operations, Drug Squad. He became the most commended officer in the history of his Force, mainly for his
work in the drugs field.
